Day 3

The Akialoa is an extinct Hawaiian bird. I decided to use a photo of a museum taxidemy of a real akialoa that had the proportions, but looks a bit faded and tattered due to age, plus an 1800s naturalist illustration for the coloring of the legs and feathers when they were alive. Combining these two sources, I imagined what the bird would have looked like if it were alive. I tried to capture the gentle curiosity of the other living birds in the family. I chose the akialoa because I LOVE that beak!

The painting features a painted blue-gray gallery-wrapped edge with my signature painted on the side in red. It is coated with a top quality non-yellowing topcoat and needs no framing.
