Ko’olau Ohia Lehua

Koolau Ohia Lehua
9″ X 12″
Acrylic on wood panel

Koolau is the mountain range in the background, and ohia lehua is the Hawaiian name for metrosideros polymorpha, the beautiful tree with red flowers sacred to Pele (the goddess of volcanoes). Together with certain ferns, they are the very first plants to emerge from the land when the lava has cooled and the landscape is barren. They grow slowly, breaking rock into soil, creating a place where the other plants can thrive. You know you are in a special place when you see them, for they are usually found in the high hills and mountains of Hawaii – such a beautiful tree! This particular specimen is at the higher elevation area of the Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens. On the day I was inspired to paint this scene, recent heavy rains created waterfalls cascading thousands of feet on the side of the mountain. Soft mists meandered over Lanihuli peak, gliding silently over the ridges of the mountain.

Giclées are high quality prints on canvas with a UV resistant protective coating. Shipped rolled (unstretched) ready for any framer to stretch and optionally frame. If displayed correctly: out of direct sunlight, and cleaned only with a damp soft cloth, these prints will stay vibrant for years.

Gallery wrapped prints have thicker stretcher bars and when you wrap the canvas around the edge, it is printed for color on the edges so that you do not have to frame it. You could also use a floater frame with this style of print.

Standard Edges must be framed. They are blank on the edges with thinner stretcher bars so that they are able to fit into a wide variety of frames.
